WHO WE ARE

The UBC PAW Animal Welfare Conference is an annual conference held on the campus of UBC Point Grey. Established and hosted by the Animal Welfare Conference Committee, a sub-division of the UBC Pre-Vet and Animal Welfare Club. The AWC Committee is comprised  of a group of upper level undergraduate students with passion and experiences in animal biology and welfare. Joined by the common goal of raising awareness for animal welfare issues, the AWC Committee selects topics most in line with current concerns, whether it be in the media or the professional field.

WHAT WE DO

Advocation & Education

The University of British Columbia: Animal Welfare Conference strives to present reliable and well rounded information by bringing in professionals of various fields with the common ground of improving animal welfare. Each with their own expertise, our unique panel of speakers tackle subjects regarding laboratory animals, wildlife in captivity, farm animals, companion animals, and more. Established in 2017, the Animal Welfare Conference has since presented two separate conferences, both targeting different concerns in animal welfare.

The Animal Welfare Conference places emphasis on receiving knowledge from multiple views, thus speakers are gathered from all backgrounds, including but not limited to academic professionals, scientists, policy-makers, and public representatives. The Conference encourages those who attend to invest in animal welfare and understand the part every individual takes in establishing optimal welfare standards for the animals involved in human operations.

PAST EVENTS

UBC PAW AWC 2017: Animals in Agriculture

In 2017, the first Animal Welfare Conference sought to bring information regarding animals involved in agriculture, specifically animals in the food industry. Speakers presented knowledge from academic, industry, policy, and consumer standpoints. The 2017 Conference was presented with the goal of having participating members of the Conference understand the impact of their decisions in terms of the food industry and how those decisions are actively affecting animal welfare.

UBC PAW AWC 2018: Animals in Science

The 2018 Animal Welfare Conference focused on the welfare of laboratory animals, such as rats and pigs, involved in research commonly done in post-secondary institutions like the University of British Columbia. Undergraduate and graduate students participating in the 2018 Conference were able to further understand the need of welfare standards when utilizing animals in science as well as learn from animal healthcare professionals and scientists involved in using animals almost daily in their research.
