Cole Burton, MSc PhD

Dr. Cole Burton is an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia and the Canada Research Chair in Terrestrial Mammal Conservation. He leads UBC’s Wildlife Coexistence Lab, where his research program focuses on coexistence between people and wildlife across multiple species and scales. Cole works collaboratively with governments, industries, ENGOs, and academics in Canada and around the world, and his research has been disseminated through 35 peer‐reviewed publications and numerous presentations for scientific and public audiences. He specializes in developing innovative approaches to wildlife monitoring, assessing the cumulative effects of human activities on animal populations, and evaluating the effectiveness of management actions. Cole received an M.Sc. in Zoology from UBC and a Ph.D. in Environmental Science, Policy and Management from the University of California, Berkeley.

The UBC PAW Animal Welfare Conference is an annual conference held at the heart of the University of British Columbia campus in Vancouver. With a unique panel of speakers joining each year, the UBC Animal Welfare Conference serves the purpose of animal welfare education for those wishing to learn more about animals in agriculture, research, zoos and aquariums, and more.
